Boys made up 51.3% of the population and girls made up 48.7%. According to the definition of the United Nations; The child population, which includes the 0-17 age group, accounted for 48.5% of the total population in 1970, compared to 41.8% in 1990 and 27.2% in 2020.

According to population projections; the child population was projected to be 26.6% in 2025, 25.6% in 2030, 23.3% in 2040, 20.4% in 2060 and 19.0% in 2080.

Turkey’s child population was found to be higher than that of European Union member states When the child population ratios of the 27 European Union (EU) member states are examined; In 2020, the EU average of the child population was 18.2%. The countries with the highest child population among EU member states, respectively; Ireland was seen as Ireland with 24.2%, France with 21.6%, and Sweden with 21.1%. The countries with the lowest child populations are, respectively; Italy was with 15.8%, Malta with 15.9% and Germany with 16.4%. Turkey’s child population was found to be higher than eu member states at 27.2%.

Sanliurfa was the province with the highest child population According to ADNKS results; when the child population ratios within the total populations of the provinces are examined; In 2020, the province with the highest child population was Sanliurfa with 45.3%. Sanliurfa province was followed by Sirnak with 42.8% and Agri with 40.9%. In 2020, 28.7% of the child population was in the 5-9 age group When examined by child age group, it was seen that in 2015, 27.9% of the child population was in the 0-4 age group, 27.7% in the 5-9 age group, 27.0% in the 10-14 age group and 17.4% in the 15-17 age group. Of the babies born, 606,861 were boys and 576,791 were girls. 96.9% of babies born alive were singular, 3.0% were twins and 0.1% were triplets and more plural births. According to ministry of health data; the rate of hospital births was 97.0% in 2019 from 91.6% in 2010. The proportion of cesarean deliveries in live births was 54.4% in 2019 from 51.1% in 2014.

The average life expectancy of a child reaching the age of 7 in Turkey was 72.5 years, 69.9 years for boys and 75.2 years for girls. For 15-year-olds at the beginning of working age, this period was 64.6 years. For boys, it was 62.0 years, while for girls it was 67.3 years. The life expectancy difference between boys and girls for this age was 5.3 years.

Child dependency rate was 33.7% in 2020 The total age dependency rate is defined as the number of people aged 0-14 to 65 and over per 100 working-age people in the 15-64 age group. According to ADNKS results; In 2020, the total age dependency rate was 47.7%. The child dependency rate, which refers to the number of children in the 0-14 age group, was 33.7% per 100 people with an age group of 15-64.

According to ADNKS results; The most popular baby boy names for babies born in 2020 are Yusuf, Eymen and Mustafa; The most popular baby girl names were Zeynep, Asel and Elif. However, the most commonly used male names in children aged 0-17 are Yusuf, Mustafa and Demir; The girls’ names were zeynep, elif and tulin.
Five-year-olds had a net enrolment rate of 75.1% According to the formal education statistics of the Ministry of National Education; The five-year net enrolment rate was 75.1% in the 2019/’20 academic year, up from 67.2% in the 2015/’16 academic year.
